The Splitter-Combiner is an electronic device that performs two functions depending in the application.

Essentially it is a passive electronic network that provides one input/output common port and two independent input/output ports. When a signal is applied to the common port and delivered thru the independent ports it is operating as a Splitter. Conversely when signal is applied to the independent ports the combination of individual ones is added to the common port, it is operating as a Combiner. Notice the Combiner is not a frequency mixer because its behaviour is linear and thus does not produce further frequency products.

Typical applications include either combining two antennas for one receiver, or if you have two receivers that you want to share on one antenna.

 

Wrong!   Right!

The antenna and each receiver have a 50Ω characteristic impedance. They can not be connected with a coaxial "T" connector ( a common misconception).
The reason is that the impedances at all connection points must be set at the correct 50Ω in order to avoid desensitation, intermodulation, and other undesirable effects due the resultant impedance mismatch. In the above left “T “wrong connection example the resultant impedance will be the parallel combination of all impedances connected to the “T” junction.

An important performance of the Antenna Splitter-Combiner is its Output1 to Output2 isolation in order to avoid coupling between receivers when you are sharing the same antenna. This is specially important on SDR receivers due their tendency to radiate back to the antenna spurious signals.

The Antenna Splitter & By-Pass Relay combines a transceiver and a Digital or analogue secondary receiver on a single antenna, enabling simultaneous reception on both apparatus.

If a secondary digital receiver connected to a PC is used panoramic reception and transmission monitoring features are available.

A passive splitter device, a set of power RF relays rated for 100Watts PP, protection and decoupling shape the circuitry.

In transmission switch-over the passive splitter device and the secondary receiver output are by-passed. In this mode transmission monitoring feature is active.

Specialised high performance, low insertion loss, set of relays rated for RF applications are used in order keep large isolation and nominal impedance.

The relays are activated from the transceiver, via delayed transmission switch over command line.

Two models available depending on the range of frequency of the passive splitter device:

- VLF- LF-HF 4KHz - 60MHz.

- HF-VHF 100KHz - 400MHz.

WARNING TO AVOID DAMAGE THE UNIT!
In order to give enough time to the relays to switch before the RF power signal outputs the transceiver when the PTT is pressed, assure that your transceiver provides a delayed "SEND" control line. e.g. derived from the linear amplifier control connector.
Alternatively a TX/RX Sequencer can be used.

USB Galvanic Digital Isolator for SDR radios

The USB Galvanic Digital Isolator for SDR radios is designed to break
the galvanic connection between USB host PC and the attached SDR
radio peripheral avoiding that whatever power and ground noise from
the PC side do not influence the sensible radio on the other side.

The resultant galvanic isolation improves common-mode voltage,
prevents ground loops, a common cause of interference and data
distortion issues, improves reception, as the noise floor in the receiver
is lowered, and removes spikes and birdies on the PC panoramic
screen. In addition provides isolation of 1000V AC between the host PC
and the radio peripheral that guard against surges that may come from
the antenna connected to the receiver.

The USB Galvanic Digital Isolator for SDR radios is based on ADuM 4160
Full/Low Speed 5 kV USB Digital Isolator and ADuM 5000 Isolated DC-to-DC Converter both from Analog Devices combining high speed CMOS and chip-scale air transformer iCoupler technology.

The USB Galvanic Digital Isolator complies with specifications USB 1.1,
Low speed (1.5Mbit/s) and USB 2.0 Full Speed (12Mbit/s). The speed
mode is set manually via two jumpers inside (default full speed). Most
of the time it is not necessary change between modes but if automatic
speed detection is desired, an external hub can be connected to the peripheral side configured for full speed.

The USB Galvanic Digital Isolator is self powered from the host PC through the USB cable. An embedded DC/DC converter provides a galvanic isolated voltage of 5VDC/100mA to the peripheral side. It includes additionally ESD,EMC protection of the data lines and power transient short-circuit guard.

It is highly advisable not to power any part of the connected radio from the USB bus, instead an external dedicated power supply must be used.

The USB Galvanic Digital Isolator behaves like an USB cable, no USB drivers are needed. It works on all operating systems, Mac, Windows,Linux, etc.

The broadband antenna isolator allows isolate the antenna galvanically from the receiver; only magnetic signal is coupling from the antenna.
Ground loops in SDR radios induced by the antenna feeder is very common if the computer ground is connected to the radio system.
This type of ground loop issue can be solved by using galvanic isolation between the receiver and the antenna cable.
In most receiver installations the antenna coaxial feeder is connected to mains earth at the receiver side. This can cause mains noise to enter into the receiver because either the feeder mains earth line is the return path for the antenna or noise being coupled to the antenna and radiated.
The Antenna Isolator can achieve up to 40dB noise rejection, depending on installation.
A high isolation broadband transformer winded on a large core is used in order to avoid be saturated due excessive level of RF signals.
In addition gas discharge tube is included in order to minimize static damage.

0 - 71 dB Step Attenuator Ladder Configuration

The step attenuator presented here for measurement purposes, is an inestimable tool for accurate control of amplitude levels. In addition, it improves the impedance match between impedance-sensitive devices, such as amplifiers, oscillators and filters, lowering the VSWR of components connected in cascaded mode by providing isolation between the impedances.
Furthermore, the step attenuator is suitable for receiver front-end protection or as calibrated attenuator for receiving performance evaluation.
The attenuator in ladder configuration uses eight high quality low stray capacitance double pole double throw (DPDT) toggle switches to select different amounts of attenuation. The unit provides 0-71 dB of attenuation in 1 dB step.
Based on Minicircuits PAT+ series, wideband DC to 7GHz fixed ceramic attenuator cells of 1dB-2dB-3dB-5dB-10dB-10dB-20dB-20dB, it gives a precise reference of attenuation
BNC connectors protected with no short-circuited metallic dust caps are used at each end of the attenuator.
