The two way passive Splitter-Combiner is an electronic device that performs two functions depending in the application.

Essentially it is a passive electronic network that provides one input/output common port and two independent input/output ports.
When a signal is applied to the common port and delivered thru the independent ports it is operating as a Splitter.
Conversely when signal is applied to the independent ports the combination of individual ones is added to the common port, it is operating as a Combiner.
Notice the Combiner is not a frequency mixer because its behaviour is linear and thus does not produce further frequency products.

Typical applications include either combining two antennas for one receiver, or if you have two receivers that you want to share on one antenna.

 

Wrong !   Right!

The antenna and each receiver have a 50Ω characteristic impedance. They can not be connected with a coaxial "T" connector ( a common misconception).
The reason is that the impedances at all connection points must be set at the correct 50Ω in order to avoid desensitisation, intermodulation distortion (IMD), and other undesirable effects due the resultant impedance mismatch. In the above left “T “wrong connection example the resultant impedance will be the parallel combination of all impedances connected to the “T” junction.

An important performance of the Antenna Splitter-Combiner is its Output1 to Output2 isolation in order to avoid coupling between receivers when you are sharing the same antenna. This is specially important on SDR receivers due their tendency to radiate back to the antenna spurious signals.

Antenna Splitter & By-Pass relay
         
     
         
 

The Antenna Splitter & By-Pass Relay combines a transceiver and a secondary receiver on a single antenna, enabling simultaneous reception feature on both radios.

In transmission switch-over the internal passive splitter device and the secondary receiver port are by-passed and grounded.

If as secondary receiver a Software Define Radio is used Panoramic Reception and Transmission Monitoring features are possible.

High performance, low insertion loss, telecommunication grade set of relays rated for RF power applications are used in order keep large isolation among ports and the nominal 50 Ohms impedance.

Two models are available depending on the range of frequency cover by the passive splitter device:

VLF- LF-MF-HF: 4kHz - 60MHz.

LF-MF- HF-VHF: 100kHz - 400MHz.

 

 
 

Antenna Splitter-By-Pass relay operation

The Antenna Splitter-By-Pass relay device is inserted between the antenna and a transceiver, a secondary receiver is connected to its corresponding port.
By default the Antenna Splitter-By-Pass relay device is in reception state enabling reception on both radios. When the transceiver transmit/receive switching (PTT or CW key) is pressed the RF outputs after some milliseconds delay time called “Peripheral-enable-to-RF output”.
This RF output delay time is used to give enough time to engage the internal relays of the Antenna Splitter & By-Pass Relay device before the RF power outputs the transceiver.The delay time varies depending on the transceiver settings.
Some popular transceivers “Peripheral-enable-to-RF output” default delay time are as follows:

Kenwood TS-480/2000: 10ms
Yaesu FT-1000 MKV/Filed: 5ms
Yaesu FTDX-9000, FT-2000: 15ms
ICOM IC-706: 15ms
ICOM IC-7000: 10ms
Elecraft K3: 8ms
TenTec Orion/OmniVII: 15ms
TenTec OmniVII & Orion I/II: 15ms

To work with the Antenna Splitter & By-Pass relay we recommend to set the delay to 20-30ms. See owner manual settings of the particular transceiver in use.

Remote Control

An output enable SEND control signal from the transceiver is activate (type sink to ground) BEFORE the Peripheral-enable-to-RF output delay time starts.
The output enable SEND control signal is generally available on a service connector located on the rear panel of the radio.
Transceiver manufactures give different names to the output enable SEND control signal as SEND, DELAY, LINEAR AMPLIFIER, TX-GND, T/R-LINE, etc. See owner manual of the particular transceiver in use.

IMPORTANT WARNING TO AVOID DAMAGE

Before apply RF power to the unit make sure that all connections are right and the device is powered. Test first switching functionality without RF power.
If the output enable SEND control signal is not connected or the Peripheral-enable-to-RF output delay time is to short the RF power coming from the transceiver will reach the device still in reception state (relays no engaged) damaging the internal splitter component and may be the secondary receiver.

Check-up that the enable output SEND control signal from the transceiver in use is the default standard on most transceivers called “Closing to Ground”, "Sink to Ground" “Sink Current”, or “Ground on Transmit” (denomination may vary).

Some transceivers may output a non-standard “+12V” enable SEND control signal instead of the standard “Closure to Ground “one. In this case the Antenna Splitter-By-Pass Relay device WILL NOT WORK.

The maximum peak sink current to activate the Antenna Splitter & By-Pass relay device is 100mA. It is compatible with relay or solid-state, closure to-ground, type of output ports.

Attenuates the spurious signals from AM broadcast band, well know enemies of SW receivers, that cause birdies and IMD, overloading and de-sensing receiver front-ends.
This filter allows to work all of 160 Meters, including the CW portion of the band without the interferences normally experienced by receivers due to overload from the strong commercial AM broadcast band signals

USB Galvanic Digital Isolator for SDR radios

The USB Galvanic Digital Isolator for SDR radios is designed to break
the galvanic connection between USB host PC and the attached SDR
radio peripheral avoiding that whatever power and ground noise from
the PC side do not influence the sensible radio on the other side.

The resultant galvanic isolation improves common-mode voltage,
prevents ground loops, a common cause of interference and data
distortion issues, improves reception, as the noise floor in the receiver
is lowered, and removes spikes and birdies on the PC panoramic
screen. In addition provides isolation of 1000V AC between the host PC
and the radio peripheral that guard against surges that may come from
the antenna connected to the receiver.

The USB Galvanic Digital Isolator for SDR radios is based on ADuM 4160
Full/Low Speed 5 kV USB Digital Isolator and ADuM 5000 Isolated DC-to-DC Converter both from Analog Devices combining high speed CMOS and chip-scale air transformer iCoupler technology.

The USB Galvanic Digital Isolator complies with specifications USB 1.1,
Low speed (1.5Mbps) and USB 2.0 Full Speed (12Mbps). The speed
mode is set manually via two jumpers inside (default full speed). Most
of the time it is not necessary change between modes but if automatic
speed detection is desired, an external hub can be connected to the peripheral side configured for full speed.

The USB Galvanic Digital Isolator is self powered from the host PC through the USB cable. An embedded DC/DC converter provides a galvanic isolated voltage of 5VDC/100mA to the peripheral side. It includes additionally ESD,EMC protection of the data lines and power transient short-circuit guard.

It is highly advisable not to power any part of the connected radio from the USB bus, instead an external dedicated power supply must be used.

The USB Galvanic Digital Isolator behaves like an USB cable, no USB drivers are needed. It works on all operating systems, Mac, Windows,Linux, etc.

 The Audio Line Galvanic Isolator removes inherent ground coupling noises providing isolation between input/output unbalanced connected interfaces. It is a differential responding high common mode rejection device that removes Hum and Buzz artifacts enhancing signal quality by reducing spectral contamination due RF interference.
On Software Define Radio applications where a computer sound card is used to sample I/Q signals, ground loops are very common through receiver between USB connection and sound card (spikes on screen) This kind of ground loop issue can be solved galvanically isolating the path between the receiver I/Q outputs and the sound card inputs.
The Audio Line Galvanic Isolator is built around two broadband high linearity, low distortion, MIL spec broadband transformers. Transformers make excellent ground isolators. They transfer signal voltage from primary to secondary without any electrical connection between them breaking the path of the noise current that would otherwise flow between interface devices.

The Audio Line Galvanic Insulator is shielded in metal case. In addition internal transformers are covered with μ-metal EMI shielding case that virtually eliminate any electromagnetic interference from nearby sources.
Input/output connector ports are Rean-Neutrik Tiny XLR improving the device shielding due their high noise immunity and EMI protection. The socket free rugged locking mechanism provides secure and reliable connection.

The Antenna Feed Line Noise Isolator prevents induced RF currents from traveling along the outer surface of the antenna feeder shield without affecting the signal inside the coaxial cable resulting in a considerable increase of the received signal quality.

Those induced currents on the coaxial cable braid are going forth and back from/to antenna and the radio station. They can be generated from multiple near sources such as running parallel cables, computers, power line networking, LED and lamp dimmers and other electric or electronic appliances. Such noise can be an issue especially in the lower section of HF spectrum, where weak signals sometimes are completely masked by all kind of buzzes, impulses and other exotic noises.

This issue is more noticeable on installations running large lengths of antenna feeder cable. Urban antenna installations are more prone to be affected.

Local induced currents on antenna feed line can increase noise floor, create signal distortion, damage the sensible input circuitry of any radio and in worst scenarios may crash any computer plugged to the radio.

Up to 40dB of noise rejection, at low frequencies, can be achieved. Noise being directly picked up by the antenna will not reduce.

The Antenna Feed Line Noise Isolator is connected in series between the antenna and the radio and preferably located outside the station, before unwanted currents get near the station wiring.

The Antenna Feed Line Noise Isolator will let pass through DC current, which is useful in situations where an active antenna, preamplifier, etc. device is powered through the coaxial cable.

The Antenna Feed Line Noise Isolator works well with any kind of antenna especially with long wire models.

The variable step attenuator presented here for measurement purposes, is an inestimable tool for accurate control of amplitude levels. In addition, it improves the impedance match between impedance-sensitive devices, such as amplifiers, oscillators and filters, lowering the VSWR of components connected in cascaded mode by providing isolation between the impedances.
Furthermore, the step attenuator is suitable for receiver front-end protection or as calibrated attenuator for receiving performance evaluation.
